Description

The Glorious 16th Aug 1940/ “Ol’ Griff” starts a Blitz! Pen and ink caricature drawing with blue wash by Flt Lt Hale, 1940. Associated with Lt E P Griffin, Tangmere, Sussex. Associated with the Royal Engineers, World War Two, Home Front (1939-1945) and the Battle of Britain, World War Two, Air Operations (1939-1945) 1940. The drawing refers to an incident during the early days of the Battle of Britain when Tangmere runway was badly damaged by enemy action. Lt Griffin applied to Chichester Council to borrow a steam roller but was refused so he and a Sergeant helped themselves and relaid the runway. Unfortunately there was another enemy attack and both runway and steam roller were destroyed. But on 16th August, during a further raid Griffin brought down on and damaged another Heinkel IIIK with a Lewis gun.
