Description

Pen and ink and watercolour map of the siege of San Sebastian by John Hambly Humfrey, Captain of Artillery and employed as Engineer, British Auxiliary Legion, 7 May 1836. Associated with Siege of San Sebastian, Carlist Wars (1833-1840) 1836. The plan was originally sent to Lt Gen Sir James Willoughby Gordon, Quartermaster General. In a covering letter dated 25th June, Humfrey describes how the Legion’s Quartermaster General, General Duncan MacDougall, ordered him to produce the map “two days after the action of 5th May”. He also asks for lithographs to be produced from it “for the benefit of the public and military men in general”. He also hopes the lithographs will correct errors from “several incorrect sketches” already published, “all of which were copied in a hurried manner from this identical plan”.
