Description

Letter written by J Harrington (b 1871?), a veteran of the Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment, to an unknown addressee, 2 Jan 1936. In the letter Harrington is applying for a renewal of a peddlers licence. To this end he briefly outlines his 12 years of Army service history, noting that he served in Malta, the North-West Frontier of India and South Africa, during the Second Boer War. Harrington then describes his lack of income and the hardship he has endured, the jobs he has undertaken and his good character. He mentions ‘coming down to the barracks’ to hopefully be granted the licence, likely the Bordon barracks (built 1901-1903), which he mentions helping to build earlier in the letter, so it is likely that this letter, its writer and addressee were near or at the Bordon Garrison, Hampshire in 1936. From a collection of three seemingly unrelated letters found together in an envelope marked ‘The Townsend Heirlooms’. Associated with India, North West Frontier (1859-1889) and Boer War (1899-1902).
