NAM.1978-12-60-1
Map: General Plan of the Island of Portsea and Survey on the Gosport Side together with the Fortifications of Portsmouth, Gosport and New Works for enclosing His Majesty’s Dockyard. Attributed by Dr H C Tomlinson and Mr A J Guy to Matthew Pitts, possibly under the direction of Maj John Archer, Corps of Engineers. The map probably dates from the period 1779-1783, or at the latest 1788, and appears to show some of the new works proposed by Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond, Master General of the Ordnance. Endorsements of 1846 by Sir John Fox Burgone and Col G Cardew RE. The originals are in the Hampshire Record Office Winchester (16 M51/7), and full descriptions are available. One of two full-size black and white photographs of maps of 1779-1788, showing the fortifications of Portsmouth Harbour, and additions proposed by the Duke of Richmond.
