Manuscript letter dated 23 Jan 1817. Written by Joseph Willcox, 1st Bn, 81st Regiment of Foot to his brother from Valenciennes near Paris. Willcox was serving with the army of occupation and retrospectively relates the story of Waterloo as heard by his then unit, 2nd Bn, 81st Regiment of Foot, who were not present, being charged with the defence of Brussels. He makes interesting reference to both rumours of a British defeat and the reactions of the Belgian civilians. He also expresses his desire to return home from his army service in France. Signed by Lt Col Mackenzie, so that Willcox got the 1d concessionary soldiers postal rate. Associated with the Battle of Waterloo, Napoleonic Wars, Waterloo (1815) 1815 and the Occupation of France (1814-1818), Napoleonic Wars, France (1814-1818).
