Description

One of a pair of formation badges, 14th Army, Royal Signals, 1945 (c); associated with Sgt T C Waterman. Red and black, shield shaped cloth badge with embroidered sword and unit number, in Roman numerals, ‘XIV’. Associated with World War Two, Far East (1941-1945). The badge was designed by General William Slim, CO 14th Army, but was only adopted after an open competition. The red and black represented the colours of the British and Indian armies. The sword pointed downwards, against heraldic convention, because Slim knew that the 14th Army would have to re-conquer Burma from the north. The hilt formed the ‘S’ for Slim.
