Description

Binoculars case, 1865 (c)-1876 (c). Used by Col Francis Howell Jenkins KCB, Indian Staff Corps and Corps of Guides and late 57th Bengal Native Infantry. Marked with the shoulder title of the Corps of Guides, Punjab Frontier Force and a cypher, possibly the same unit, 1865 (c)-1876 (c). The case is made of pig skin and consists of a shaped section to hold the binoculars and a shaped lid that reaches to the base of the case. There is a small stud on the base. A broken strap is attached to rings on either side of the case, with floral decoration. On each ring is also a larger rectangular ring. The case is lined with red fabric, possibly velvet. Col Jenkins served with the Guides from 1865-1886. From 1870-1886 he was commandant of the unit, during which time the prefix ‘Queen’s Own’ was added to its title.
