Description

Wireless set secretly used by British prisoners-of-war in a Japanese prison camp, Hong Kong in World War Two (1941-1945). Col Lanceray Arthur Newnham MC, Middlesex Regiment and the British Army Aid Group was tortured and executed for his part in contacting secret agents, during this ordeal he refused to divulge the whereabouts of this set. For his bravery he was posthumously awarded the George Cross. Newnham is buried in Stanley Military Cemetery in Hong Kong. Set is in two separate parts. Both sections consist of a field gray box with a brown end piece and various dials. One is marked ‘power pack’ and has many small holes in the sides, presumably for ventilation. The other has knobs for tuning and adjusting ‘AE Trimmer’. The brown end pieces are held on with small pieces of metal, rather than screws. Associated with World War Two, POWs Far East, 1941-1945.
