Dervish banner, reputedly captured at Omdurman by ‘Ensign Hugh Prutherson-Smith’, 21st Lancers, 1898. Lieutenant Colonel Sir Hugh Bateman Protheroe-Smith is listed amongst the officers of the 21st Lancers who took part and survived the famous charge at the Battle of Omdurman on 2.9.1898 during the 2nd Sudan War (1896-1898). Associated with the Battle of Omdurman, 2nd Sudan War 1898 (1896-1899).
