Description
Chinese embroidered banner, 1776 Brought from China about 1860 by Maj Gen James Don Kennedy, 70th Bengal Native Infantry. Said to have come from Yuanming Yuan, the Summer Palace, Peking, but this is considered unlikely. Associated with 2nd China War (1856-1860). This late eighteenth-century embroidered textile was commissioned by family members to celebrate the 101st birthday of a matriarch of the He family. It comes from the Guangdong region of China. The banner would have been hung in the family ancestral shrine.
