Trepanning the Recruit, 1791. Coloured photogravure by G Keating after George Morland, 1791. Publisher unknown. Modern copy of Number one in the series originally published by J R Smith, 1791. A recruit is ‘trepanned’ or tricked into joining the army while the drummer with his drumstick mimes the other meaning of the word, to bore into the skull.
