Light padded waistcoat, khaki, 1914 (c)-1918 (c). Belonged to Sgt L W Brown of the Buffs (East Kent Regiment), who served in World War One (1914-1918) It was possibly privately purchased and is most likely to be padded with linen, cotton and possibly horsehair. It was thought these fibres, like silk, could slow down bullets or protect the wearer from shrapnel blasts. It features two front pockets with a button to fasten on each, there are 7 buttons for fastening at the side. At the bottom, there are two small straps and black buckles stamped ‘PARIS’ to adjust the size. A ‘U’ shaped piece of padded fabric to protect the crotch is attached to the bottom with 3 buttons. This is also with a strap and buckle marked ‘PARIS’.
