Description

Solar topi or pith helmet, Indian Political Service, worn by Sir Robert Sandeman as Agent to the Governor-General in Baluchistan, 1879-1880. White pith covered with khaki cotton. Associated with 2nd Afghan War, 1878-1880. Sir Robert was the Governor-General's agent in Baluchistan throughout the Second Afghan War. His negotiations with the tribes along the vital supply lines between India and Kandahar, became particularly important after the Battle of Maiwand in July 1880 and during the British withdrawal. His approach was muscular. Attacked by Pathan tribesmen in 1880, he led an assault on their village and was shot through this hat. Remarkably, he survived.
