Description

Officers’ shoulder belt plate, Monmouthshire Rifle Volunteers, possibly 2nd Monmouthshire (1st Pontypool) Rifle Volunteers, 1870 (c). Die-struck grey white metal. Within an oakleaf wreath, a dragon rampant upon a heraldic wreath upon a frosted ground, the whole surmounted by a monarchial crown. Screw and lug fittings on reverse, one below crown and one at lower edge. Possibly 2nd Monmouthshire since this appears to have been the only Welsh Rifle Volunteer unit to use a dragon rampant as opposed to a dragon passant as part of their badge.
