Ceramic match stand with the figure of the defiant British rifleman, 1900 (c). Manufactured by Macintyre and Company, Burslem, England, 1900 (c). White glazed creamware with brown transfer printed design and gold edging. Solid spherical stand, with a flattened base, cylindrical cavity on top. Inscribed verso with an extract from Rudyard Kipling’s poem, ‘The Absent-minded Beggar’. Associated with the Boer War (1899-1902).
