Letter from Pte Eustace Swain, 3rd (King’s Own) Hussars, Lucknow, India to his friend Tom Humberstone, England, 4 Jan 1899. Pte Swain describes, been in hospital 6 weeks with enteric, ‘of course all the girls out here are black but they [sic] are very gay rings in their nose and lips so they are not very tasty like thos up the hill’. Associated with Boer War (1899-1902).
