Victoria Cross, gallantry award
Accession Number

NAM.2018-12-17-1-1

Description

Victoria Cross recovered from the River Thames foreshore. Metallurgical analysis confirms that it is a genuine VC awarded for the Battle of Inkerman. Associated with the Crimean War (1854-1856). Recovered from the River Thames foreshore by a mudlark, Mr Tobias Neto. Portable X-Ray Fluorescence scanning conducted by Andrew Marriott of Newcastle University has confirmed the VC is genuine. By a process of elimination, we know it belonged to either John Byrne of the 68th Durham Light Infantry or Pte John McDermond of the 47th Lancashire Regiment. Suspension bar which would have been named has become disassociated from the medal.
