Description

Knee, ankle and foot orthotics (KAFO), 2013 (c)-2018. Manufactured by Blatchford at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court, Surrey, 2018. Associated with Operation HERRICK, Afghanistan (2001- ) 2002-2014. Used to support a limb, that has not been amputated but has been damaged, giving the wearer the ability to stand. It locks at the knee joint to give the wearer the ability to stand, and unlocks to allow them to sit. Used sometimes by wheelchair users if they wish to stand for a specific occasion such as a parade etc. This sort of orthotic equipment would be used by patients that have sustained a nerve injury to their leg and were suffering from ‘drop foot’. Commonly this was from gun shot wounds or fragmentation from improvised explosive devices that has damaged nerves and vital structures in the lower limbs.
