Order of the British Empire badge with bow (as issued to ladies) awarded to Chief Commander Daphne Millais James, ATS, 1945 OBE recommendation reads: ‘This officers has been commanding No 1 Continental Group since May 1944. During this time it has grown from a strength of 500 to approximately 1700 at the present time. The problems confronting the OC of this the first and for a long time the only ATS Group in 21 Army Group were many and varied and most of them would not confront a Group Commander in the UK. Many of them had considerable political importance in view of the interest taken by Parliament and the public generally in the ATS in BLA. Chief Commander James has shown outstanding qualities of judgement, sound common sense, and a knowledge of humanity in her dealings with the Officers and women under her command and with the Officers under whom the ATS work. In view of the size and importance of No 1 Continental Group the great success of the ATS in BLA can be attributed in a large measure to Chief Commander James’s striking success as Group Commander. She is liked , admired and respected by every Officer, soldier and auxiliary with whom she has come in contact.’
