Description

Infantry officer’s sword, pattern 1897, with service scabbard, 1899-1901 (c). Possibly made by Pillin and Sons and sold by M Wiseman (tailor), 43 Sackville Street, London. Lightweight example of the pattern with the blade and grip both narrower than usual and the hilt smaller. Possibly a picquet-weight sword. The name of the retailer M Wiseman is marked on the ricasso and the proof mark has a letter ‘P’, possibly for ‘Pillin’. On the blade is an unusual cypher below the royal cypher. The hilt bears the VR cypher.
