On side a of the platter it is inscribed ‘Presented to the Officers XVIII Victoria Mary Princess of Wales’s Own Hussars. by Lieut Colonel & Brevet Colonel P.S. Marling V.C. C.B. on giving up Command of the Regiment, Feb. 18th 1906’. On side b of the platter it is inscribed: ‘The following Honours were awarded to The 18th Hussars for their services during the South African War. 2 Royal Human Society Medals, 16 Officers & 48 N.C.O’s & Troopers were mentioned in dispatches for meritorious & gallant conduct, 11 N.C.O’s & Troopers were promoted for conspicuous bravery in the Field’. On side c of the platter is inscribed: ‘The names engraved on this dish are the facsimile signatures of all the Officers who served with the 18th Hussars during The South African War 189-1902. 2 Officers & 9 N.C.O’s & Troopers were killed, died of of wounds or disease. 9 Officers & 94 N.C.O’s & Troopers of the Regiment were wounded during the War’.
