Description

Victoria Cross, 1915. From medal group awarded to 2/Lt R P Hallowes, 4th Bn Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment) and 28th Bn London Regiment, for his actions at Hooge, Belgium, on the 25 and 30 Sep 1915. Associated with World War One (1914-1918). Temp 2/Lt Rupert Price Hallowes, 4th Bn Middlesex Regiment, was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions at Hooge, Belgium, on the 25 and 30 Sep 1915. During four heavy and prolonged bombardments, on more than one occasion, 2/Lt Hallowes climbed up on the parapet of his trench, regardless of danger in order to raise the morale of his men. When the supply of bombs was running short he went back under a very heavy shell-fire and brought up a fresh supply. He also assisted in making a block, dug out a communication trench under heavy shell fire and rebuilt a parapet that had been blown in. Even after he was mortally wounded he continued to cheer those around him and to inspire them with fresh courage.
