Captain Sir William Peel had first distinguished himself fighting the Russians in the Crimean War (1854-1856) during which he won the Victoria Cross. During the India Mutiny (1857-1859) the heavy guns of Peel’s Naval Brigade, made up of sailors from the steam frigate HMS Shannon, played an important part in the capture of Lucknow. Peel was badly injured by a musket ball during the taking of the city and died later the same year of smallpox.
