Description

Bulgarian Army identification plate, picked up on Doiran battlefield, Salonika, by Capt Eric Richard Hanby Holmes, 12th Corps Signals, September 1918. Inscription identifies the former owner of the disc as Pte Petko Vyrbanov, 1st Coy, 4th Pleven Infantry Regiment of 9th Division (Bulgarian Army). Pte Vyrbanov came from the village of Tuchenitza in the Pleven Region and was part of the 'draft of 1905', meaning he was born in 1884 or 1885, and was probably a reservist called up to serve in World War One. The disc was most likely to have been made by Pte Vyrbanov as Bulgarian soldiers were only issued with a paper identification card, not a metal disc. Inscribed with Bulgarian script, lettering is uneven and probably written by the owner. Associated with World War One, Salonika (1914-1918).
