Description

Victoria Cross, 1916. Awarded to Capt Arthur Hugh Henry Batten-Pooll, MC VC whilst a Lieutenant in the 3rd Bn Royal Munster Fusiliers, for his actions at a place near Calonne, France on 24 Jun 1916. Associated with World War One (1914-1918). On 25 June 1916 near Colonne, France, Lt Batten-Pooll was in command of a raiding party when, on entering the enemy's lines he was severely wounded by a bomb which broke and mutilated all the fingers of his right hand. In spite of this he continued to direct operations with unflinching courage. Half an hour later during the withdrawal, while personally assisting in the rescue of other wounded men, he received two further wounds, but refusing assistance, he walked to within 100 yards of our lines when he fainted and was carried in by the covering party. Lt Batten-Pooll was decorated with this VC by HRH King George V at Buckingham Palace on 4th November 1916. Batten-Pooll was born in London on 25 Oct 1891 and died in Devon on 21st January 1971. From a collection of 12 items associated with Capt Arthur Hugh Henry Batten-Pooll, Royal Munster Fusiliers.
