NAM.1993-03-64-1
First of three sound cassettes: oral history interview with Capt William Stallybrass, Intelligence Corps 1940-1946, Royal Military Academy Sandhurst 1947-1971, and Ghana Military Academy 1960-1961. In 1933-1934 Stallybrass lived in Germany as an exchange student, which gave him valuable insights into the German character. He took up teaching in Durham, joined the Army in 1940 and attended an OCTU at Dunbar from March 1941. He was posted to the Intelligence Corps, and after a short time at the Interrogation Centre at Cambridge served for a year at HQ Eastern Command on anti-invasion measures. From there he was posted to SHAEF to prepare guide books for the use by troops invading Normandy, a task completed by April 1944. The following October he went to France, and was posted to the Enemy Documents Unit early in 1945, moving to Frankfurt around VE Day and serving with the Control Commission for Germany and the Field Information Agency (Technical). After service in Washington (1946) he left the Army and returned to teaching for a year. Between 1947-1971 he was Lecturer in Languages at Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and Director of Studies at the Ghana Military Academy 1960-1961. Interviewed by Peter Boyden, 10 February 1993.
