Description
Lead plaque, 1940 (c). Taken from the wreck of a Savoia Marchetti SM79 aircraft, made in Italy 1940 (c). Oblong with bevelled edges and an inscription in individually impressed capitals, backed by remains of metal on which it was mounted. The aircraft was destroyed by the Long Range Desert Group at Jebel Uweinat and removed from the wreck by a member of the RAF Desert Rescue Team based at RAF El Adem in 1969 during the Team’s last major exercise.
