Centrepiece, 1953. Silver, Indian manufacture, 1953 (c). Presented to Sir John Hunt, leader of the 1953 Everest Expedition, by the Delhi Municipal Committee, 1953. A fluted column, surmounted by four lions, stands on a wooden plinth which carries a plaque inscribed: Presented By/ The Delhi Municipal Committee/ on 29th June 1953/ To Sir John Hunt/ Leader of the British Everest Expedition/ which Conquered Mount Everest/ on 29th May 1953. Originally carried an adhesive label bearing the number 51. The item represents the Asoka lion column, an ancient Indian sculpture.
