Description

Native Officers of Skinner’s Horse, now the first & third Indian Cavalry, 1850 (c). Two-tone photolithograph after a watercolour by William Carpenter in the Victoria and Albert Museum, published by 'The Sphere' 26 Nov 1917. Mounted Rissaldar and Woordie-Major. The two officers depicted are a mounted Rissaldar (Troop commander) and a Woordie-Major (adjutant) of Skinner’s Horse. Their unit was raised by Captain (later Colonel) James Skinner (1778-1841) in 1803 and wore distinctive yellow kurtas (long coats) that prompted the nickname ‘the yellow boys’.
