Description
An unidentified officer of the 78th (Highlanders) Regiment of Foot, 1809 (c). Silhouette portrait in watercolour on paper, by John Buncombe (fl 1795-1830, d 1837), 1809 (c). In a painted glass mount within an elaborate, gold painted frame. Half-length portrait, in profile to left, wearing a Highland bonnet with red and white plume, red jacket with buff facings and gold lace and the shoulder belt of the 78th (Highlanders) Regiment of Foot. In 1808-1809 the 78th Highlanders were quartered on the Isle of Wight, home of the artist John Buncombe, so it is likely that this silhouette was painted at that time.
