Description
Portrait of an officer, a member of the Spring family, 1790 (c). Miniature possibly on enamel, artist unknown, 1790 (c). Head and shoulders in uniform with dark blue facings and a powdered wig, looking to right. In a glazed gold frame with a suspension loop, broken brooch fittings and also fittings for mounting as a bracelet, sewn onto an original black velvet wrist band. The only Spring in the Army List for 1790 is Ensign William Collis Spring (1769-1825), 48th (or the Northamptonshire) Regiment of Foot. This portrait is of a much older man and does not resemble the portrait of William Collis Spring in the museum collection. There are no Springs in the Army List for 1785.
