Ensign John Spring (d 1836), 12th (East Suffolk) Regiment, 1829 (c). Silhouette portrait in watercolour on card, artist unknown, 1829 (c). Head and shoulders portrait in uniform, in profile, looking to left. In a glazed, black-painted frame with a brass, acorn suspension loop. John Spring was one of five sons and one daughter of Lieutenant-Colonel William Collis Spring and Anne Carter, daughter of Colonel Carter. He joined the Army in February 1829 as an ensign in the 12th (East Suffolk) Regiment. Promoted lieutenant in 1833, he transferred to the 9th (or the East Norfolk) Regiment in 1834. Spring died unmarried at Chinsurah, Bengal, in 1836. A regimental history records a number of deaths from cholera in the 9th Regiment at around this time, when it was serving in India. John Spring may have been one of these casualties.
