Description
The Signal Defeat of the French Admiral Linois’s Squadron, 15 Feb 1804. Coloured steel engraving, nd. Published by Laurie and Whittle, 53 Fleet Street, London, 24 Jun 1805. Linois’s warships sighted the ‘China Fleet’, an East India Company convoy back to Britain, off Pulo Aor or Pulo Aura. The convoy had no naval escort, but its commander Nathaniel Dance hoisted Royal Navy flags and formed line of battle. This made Linois mistake the ships for warships and avoid giving battle. Dance was knighted and given a pension by the Company for his success.
