Description

Official photograph showing a concentration of the British 17th Division at Hénencourt, Somme, as the V Corps reserve after evacuation during the German offensive Battle of Rosières (Operation Michael). Taken by 2/Lt David McLellan on the 26th March 1918. A large amount of British soldiers in tin helmets can be seen sitting or standing on either side of a road as they await their next movement. Many are chatting or smoking with their equipment as rifles lie around them. Along the road horses and carts pull heavier bits of equipment in the direction of a large chateau at the end. Other buildings line the road. From a collection of 20 official photographs of Front Line related activity from World War One (1914-1918). From the collection of the Christopherson family.
