Description

Photograph captioned: ‘Officers & NCOs of No. 8 Coy. 3rd Bn Grenadier Guards ‘94. Wellington Barracks, London’, taken in 1894. They line up in three rows outside the doors of a building. The officers sitting in the front are wearing their frock coats, sash and peaked forage caps with their gloves in their hands. The Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) wear their tunics and most are in the pillbox caps, with their insignia clear on their right shoulders. The drum major (front left) wears the ornately decorated tunic of his rank and holds a swagger stick. The soldier on the right of the front row is a Colour Sergeant and next to him the Drill Sergeant. Despite being close in rank the Drill Sergeant wears a senior NCO's forage cap, the style of which is similar to the officers' with a solid metal badge but also has a gold lace cap band. The tunic collars have gold lace also. He has the same badge of rank as the Colour Sergeant next to him - the Colour badge superimposed on three gold chevrons - but he out-ranks Colour Sergeants. Most of them are named as: (Back row, from left to right): Cpl Smith; Cpl McKelvey; L/Sgt Dawes; Cpl Hornsey (Middle row, from left to right): Sgt Wilson; Cpl Wall; - ; - Cpl Bruce; Sgt Johnson (Front row; from left to right): Drum Major McCoy; Lt Wilfred George Howard Marshall; Major Henry Streatfield; 2/Lt Ernest Frederick Orby Gascoigne; Drill Sgt G Dunkeld; Colour Sgt W Jackson From an album of 99 photographs compiled by or presented to Captain (later Brig-Gen) Ernest Frederick Orby Gascoigne.
