Description

Group photograph including the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards at Cove Common camp, Hampshire, gathered for Queen Victoria's Jubilee, 1897. They sit or stand in several long rows on the grass in front of trees and a tent, wearing a mixture of uniforms. There appears to be some soldiers wearing service dress including bearskin caps, or for the higher ranking officers, cocked hats with feather plumes. Many of the others are wearing patrol jackets and field service caps or peaked caps. They are probably the Brigade of Guards, there are also some Coldstream Guards and Scots Guards (with the distinctive diced banding around their peaked caps) in the image. The handwritten captions in the album are largely illegible but the names or Maj Robert Scott-Kerr and Maj David Kinloch, both 2nd Bn Grenadier Guards, can be seen. Image possibly produced by W. Gregory & Co., London, and F. G. O. Stuart. From a photograph album of 111 photographs entitled '2nd Battalion 1897-1909', relating to the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards in the UK, South Africa and Gibraltar from 1897 to 1909. Mostly group photos and individual portraits.
