Photograph of soldiers (possibly signallers) from the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards riding donkeys up an incline beside a wall on the outskirts of a Tangier, Morocco, 1899. They are wearing patrol jackets and pillbox caps, and are accompanied by several local men and children. A large white building, probably St Andrew’s Anglican Church, can be seen behind them, as well as houses and trees in the background. Construction began on the Moorish style church in 1894 and was finished in 1903 - the belltower, shaped like a minaret, is still under construction in this image. From an album of 89 photographs related to the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards in Gibraltar and Morocco, 1899. Mainly images showing other ranks group portraits, sports teams, marching, rifle drill.
