Description

Photograph of the Drummers of the 3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards, taken at Chelsea Barracks in June 1906. The 30 drummers pose for the image in three rows in front of a barrack building. They are wearing white drill jackets and peakless caps. There are also two officers in the front row - Warrant Officer Drum Major Robert Wombell, who wears an undress tunic and forage cap, can be seen holding his Drum Major’s mace. Next to him is Lt and Adjutant Roland Hermon-Hodge, wearing a braided frock coat and forage cap - he has the bass drum in front of him. On Wombwell’s other side is Cpl J Cox. He, like some others in the front row, has a drummer’s apron attached to his waist. Other drums can be seen in front of the group, and laying on the ground is the battalion’s dog, Modder. Modder has two medals attached to her collar, probably the King’s and Queen’s South Africa medals. Photograph taken by Mons. Louis of Euston Road, London. From an album of 27 photographs entitled: ‘3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards. Sergeants Mess’, 1898-1922. Most are images taken in Chelsea Barracks, Wellington Barracks and the Tower of London, with some taken in South Africa.
