Regimental Sergeant Major’s pace stick especially made and donated to Capt (QM) John Phillips, Royal Engineers, by the soldiers of his regiment upon his promotion to Regimental Sergeant Major, 1982-1983. Made of lighter wood and is thinner than a standard pace stick because, his comrades felt that the standard pace stick would be too heavy and cumbersome for someone with only one arm. From a collection of objects relating to the military service of Capt (QM) John Phillips, Royal Engineers with the Bomb Disposal and Field Squadrons 1958-1989. Phillips served in Northern Ireland and lost his arm while trying to diffuse a bomb on HMS Antelope in the Falklands. Associated with the South Atlantic (Falklands War) 1982.
