Description

A handwritten copy of letters copied by Charlotte Maxwell, originally written by Francis Maxwell to her. Maxwell apologises that he has only just got round to reading Charlottes previous letters. He also discusses another advancement with his men, describing how in the confusion of enemy fire and thick smoke from the shelling they became disorientated. He describes seeing injured men and after running out of bandages and water had little choice but to leave them and hope help could reach them late, calls for doctors and stretcher bearers went unanswered. Maxwell tells Charlotte that over the past three days they had lost 7 officers and 300 men to shelling. Charlotte writes a little note to Nina at the end of the letter.
