Description

Photograph of Gen Charles Frederick Cox (1863-1944), commander of the Australian 1st Light Horse Brigade (1915-19), and Maj Gen Sir Edward Chaytor (1868–1939), commander of the Australian and New Zealand Mounted Division (1917–18), 1917 (c). They stand next to a staff car which features the interlocked Silver Fern and Boomerang formation badge of the ANZAC Mounted Division upon its door. From album of 516 photographs; first of three photograph albums compiled by Brig John Gilbert Browne (b 1879), 1916-1919; associated with 14th (King's) Hussars, Mediterranean Expeditionary Force and Egyptian Expeditionary Force. Chaytor took command of the ANZAC Mounted Division in April 1917, replacing General Harry Chauvel who had been promoted to command of the Desert Mounted Corps. Therefore this photo is likely to be sometime around mid-1917.
