In March 1966 the 1st Bn Middlesex Regiment (Duke of Cambridge’s Own) was posted to British Guiana to carry out peace keeping duties in response to racial conflict between inhabitants of Asian and African origin. British Guiana became independent on 26 May 1966 under the new name Guyana. The Middlesex Regiment stayed on until Oct 1966 training the Guyana Defence Force.
