1st Battalion Assam Regiment was established at Government House, Shilong on 15 June 1941. Despite generous drafts from the Assam Rifles it was initially well below strength and many men in Assam who had served in the Army or police corps were persuaded to re-enlist. A training company was raised in December 1941 and a second battalion was formed on 14 April 1942 to accommodate the increasing number of volunteers from the hill districts and plains of Assam Province in north-east India.
