Inscriptions

Typed on caption: 'EAST AFRICANS IN BURMA.'; '452/65. After about a night's journey the smaller hospital boat (a former Brahmaputra River wheel steamer) reaches the open sea, and 'Ducks' arrive to take off the patients. The lighter casualties are taken ashore to a CCS where they may remain as long as 2 or 3 weeks. The serious cases are taken off to a larger hospital steamer - in this case a pre-war P & O liner - which takes the patients right back as far as Calcutta, Bombay, or similar bases; or in some cases back to Europe, America or Africa. The patients are hoisted on board the hospital liner with the aid of a stretcher attached to a crane.'
