Description

Photograph: The brains of the party & myself. Capt. Cave Browne (R.E.) on my left & Lt. Hayes (survey of Egypt) (holding map) on my right. Cave Browne & I were at the same private school. Shows three men standing in front of a car with another in the background. Page entitled: ‘The Jezireh Reconnaissance. March 1917.’. Additional information on page reads, ‘I was ordered to carry out this reconnaissance (which lasted six days) to find out whether, by making use of some of the ancient canals (now all dry) it would be possible to divert Euphrates water into the Tigris near Ctesiphon. The Tigris was then very low and the main object of the scheme was to raise its level to admit of all our river steamers getting up-river without grounding. The scheme was found not to be impossible, but the time, labour and materiel [sic] involved were all prohibitive. It was therefore dropped.’. From a photograph album of 230 photographs compiled by Col W Leith-Ross, Army Staff, 1916-1917. Associated with World War One, Mesopotamia (1914-1918).
