Description

Photograph of a group portrait of 11 young men from the Oppidian Wall XI, Eton College, posing in Wall Game attire, 1916. The captain, R C Alexander, sits in the centre with the ball at his feet. Behind them is a wall with a door in it. The Eton wall game, a sport which has some similarities to rugby union, originated and is still played at Eton College. The field used is a strip of ground 5m wide and 110m long called "The Furrow" which has a slightly curved brick wall next to it. The two targets, a garden door and a tree at each end, are all used for scoring. Pictured, from left to right: (Back row): H H Low, A E C Tennyson d’Eyncourt, J F S McLaren, H F Wilkinson (Middle row): C P R Glyn, W R S Stephenson, R C Alexander (Capt.), O W Dudley-Smith, W L F Tennyson d’Eyncourt (Front row): G Calrow, P G Gregson-Ellis. From an album of 73 photographs compiled by or presented to Lt Col Osbert Walter Dudley Smith. The album is entitled: ‘Personal Album of O W D Smith’, and covers the period 1912-1930 (c). Contains portraits, group photos, including sports teams, and images of Eton College. Grenadier Guards reference number 83.
