Description

Photograph: The well, 1½ miles North of Khan Azad. L to R:- Interpreter Habib - of Mosul, Lieut. Hayes, (Survey of Egypt) - Captain Cave Browne, R.E. As usual, I was the one to take the photograph. Shows a number of men standing around a brick lined well in the desert. Page entitled: The Jazireh Reconnaissance continued. March 1917. Additional notes on the page read: ‘Mesopotamia, and particularly the desert country lying between the Tigris & the Euphrates (known as the Jazireh) holds the remains of various ancient canal & irrigation systems, many of which are extensive works of skilled engineering. Today the great banks are denuded and broken in numerous places but many are still well preserved. What levelling instruments did these ancient people use? From a photograph album of 230 photographs compiled by Col W Leith-Ross, Army Staff, 1916-1917. Associated with World War One, Mesopotamia (1914-1918).
