Manuscript carbon copy of a letter by Sir Charles Fox to E Lamiral, dated 27 Mar 1855.
Letter expresses the intention to build one of Lamiral's submarines and that he has 'prevailed on Lord Palmerston to give me authority to have a boat prepared' by Messrs Scott Russell and Company and 'sent to the Seat of War', that is the Crimea.
From a collection of papers relating to the career of John Cochrane, engineer, with particular reference to his advisory role to the Crimean railway for the Board of Ordnance and consultation on the possible use of a submarine vehicle there devised by a Frenchman, E Lamiral and partner, 1854-1855.
