Photograph of a casualty in an air ambulance, 1944 (c). A wounded soldier from 81st West African Division awaits evacuation in a transport aircraft. The rough Burmese terrain and the isolated locations of many Allied units meant that air evacuation of casualties was vital during the campaign. From an album of 36 photographs compiled by Captain E B Mee (later Major), Royal Signals, 81st West African Division, Burma, 1944-1945
