He mentions the Battle of Chernaya and remarks how he had urged Edward Betts to send steam locomotives to the Crimea at the outset.
From collection of 18 letters mostly exchanged between the brothers Edgar and Lewin Swan, Eastern Counties Railway Engineers, 1854-1855.
Edgar went to the Crimea as one of three assistant engineers with the consortium of Peto, Brassey and Betts to construct the Balaklava railway.
Lewin at the same time was working in Paris.
